The Whole Terrace, Just the Two of You

The word gets stretched on this island. A private corner of a restaurant terrace still comes with other tables, and strangers applauding a stranger's engagement. A hotel balcony is a slice of a building, not a space of your own. You can propose beautifully in all of these places. What you cannot do is have the place to yourselves.

Choice of minute, first of all: nobody needs your table after you, so the question comes when the light is right, not when a sitting ends. Choice of sound: the music is yours, played through the venue's own system, and beneath it only the Aegean — we sit on the caldera side of Fira near the water, below the noise of the town, looking out at the dark shape of the Nea Kameni volcano.

And choice of feeling. People say things at a proposal they would never say in front of an audience. Shaking hands, a long pause, happy crying — none of it has to be performed, because the terrace is closed to everyone you did not invite.
