A Heart of Roses at the Old Port

For Keith and Mallory’s evening the terrace wore its most asked-for dress: a heart of red roses the height of a person, standing under the white canopy with lit bulbs hanging through it, gold candelabras down both sides, MARRY ME in letters, and a carpet of red petals running the whole floor. The caldera did the rest — the set faces straight out over the water, so the heart frames the sea and the sea frames the heart.

The question was asked inside the heart itself — one knee on the petals, the ring out of its box, the sun flaring low through the drapes. Then champagne beside the roses, and the kind of smiling that does not stop for a while.

What makes this evening worth showing is what happened after. Because ΑΙΩΝ stands on the old port of Fira, the photographs did not end at the terrace rail: the two of them walked out along the quay past the fishing boats, stood at the end of the pier under the old lamppost, and let the caldera close the evening around them. A three-hour booking, one couple, and a set the public viewpoints of this island simply cannot stage.
