A Symbolic Ceremony, All Feeling, No Paperwork

A symbolic wedding is a ceremony without legal paperwork — pure celebration. Many couples marry legally at home, then hold the wedding they actually wanted on our private terrace in Fira: any script, any ritual, any officiant. Everything else stays a real wedding — arch, vows, one long table — only the courthouse part is missing.

What is a symbolic wedding?

A ceremony with everything except the legal registration. There are no documents to gather, no authorisations to wait for, nothing lodged with any office — which means there is also nothing that can delay you, and no rule about what the ceremony must contain. You stand on our terrace above the caldera, someone you have chosen leads the moment, you say what you mean to say, and the people you love watch you say it. Legally it changes nothing. In every way a wedding is actually about, it changes everything.

Why do couples choose a symbolic ceremony?

Most often because the legal part is already done. Marrying on paper at home — quickly, quietly, at the local registry — then celebrating properly in Santorini is one of the most sensible sequences in the wedding world: the bureaucracy happens where your documents live, and the wedding happens where the sunset does. Others choose it because their preferred officiant is a friend rather than an official, or because they want a ceremony no legal format would recognise. All of those reasons land on the same terrace.

Write the ceremony you actually want

This is the format's real gift: the script is entirely yours. Your own vows, or none. Readings by your mother, a blessing in your own language, a ring exchange, a shared glass of Santorini's volcanic-soil wine, a friend officiating in whatever tone your friendship deserves — solemn, funny, both. Our music system carries your processional; our staff cue the moment; the arch with white curtains comes with the Obsidian package if you want the classic frame. We have watched many of these ceremonies from a respectful distance, and no two have ever been alike.

Does it still feel like a real wedding?

It looks, sounds and photographs exactly like one — because it is one. Chairs face the Aegean for up to 30 guests, umbrellas shade the afternoon, vows happen at golden hour. And afterwards the terrace turns, as it always does, into a dinner: one long table with white cloths, candles, and Chef Iosif of Lomvranos Restaurant behind the menu. Nobody at that table will be thinking about paperwork.

When is the best hour for a symbolic ceremony?

Golden hour — the stretch before the sun touches the sea — and because nothing legal constrains your schedule, you can place the vows exactly on it. Sunset moves through the year, from early winter evenings to long July light, so we time each ceremony to its own month; our month-by-month Santorini sunset table shows precisely when the sky performs. We host symbolic ceremonies year-round, and the terrace faces the sunset in every season.

Symbolic, civil — or years later?

If you want the legal moment itself to happen in Greece, that is a civil wedding in Santorini, and we host those too. If it is just the two of you flying in, the elopement page describes your evening better. And if the wedding already happened years ago, a symbolic ceremony has a warmer name — a vow renewal above the Aegean. Venue rates for all of them start at €500 and stay flat all year; see the rental packages, or start at the Santorini weddings hub.
